The A Zildjian 13” Mastersound Hi-Hats (1998) feature a unique edge design that eliminates airlock and enhances projection. Instead of crimping the entire edge of the bottom cymbal, Zildjian employed a special hammering technique on the outer rim, paired with an unlathed half-inch underside to create precise contact points.
This innovative design delivers a solid, cutting “chick,” excellent splash response, and a bright, high-pitched tonality. Compared to the classic New Beat design, the Mastersounds are slightly heavier with a higher bow profile, offering strong mid- and high-frequency projection.
The 13” size makes them quick and responsive, with tight articulation ideal for cutting through dense mixes. While these hi-hats excel in rock, pop, and other high-volume situations, drummers can also pair the specially hammered Mastersound bottom with a thinner top for more delicate sounds—an approach famously used by players like Steve Smith.
